just Harsha, off the clock

Personal mode

Ayubowan! I'm Harsha.

I grew up in Mawathagama, a small town in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka. Somewhere between school and the bank counter I fell for building things with code.

Off the clock, music is what heals me: Avenged Sevenfold turned up loud, or Gareth Emery's trance. When it's quiet, I'm lost in a book, or making friends with the nearest cat.

  • Mawathagama, Kurunegala
  • Music heals me
  • Always mid-book
  • Cat person, elephant admirer

03 / Hobbies

When the laptop is closed.

Music, books, sport, travel and the night sky, plus a couple of side quests and a big soft spot for animals.

favourite #1

"Music heals me."

It's my favourite hobby and the first thing I reach for after a long day. And it has two sides.

Two sides of me

  • Avenged Sevenfold

    Rock

  • Gareth Emery

    Electronic trance

I love the guitar, and I'm learning to play it. Very much a work in progress.

learning in progress

My favourite song, from my favourite band: Avenged Sevenfold

favourite #2

Books

I've been reading since I was young, and these days I don't only read books, I listen to them too.

Favourites

  • Smith and the Pharaohs

    H. Rider Haggard

    My all-time favourite

  • Harry Potter series

    J. K. Rowling

The series I keep coming back to

How I read

  • Printed booksSince I was a kid
  • E-booksGetting familiar
  • AudiobooksWhen my eyes are tired from work
I once asked myself why music became my #1 hobby. The answer: it's easy to bring anywhere: driving, walking, travelling, resting, partying, bathing, even falling asleep. Audiobooks let books come along the same way: I can close my eyes and still pick up a story.
favourite #3

Cricket & Football

Playing with friends or following a match is how I switch off and recharge. My heroes:

  • Cristiano RonaldoMy icon
  • Kumar SangakkaraBatsman
  • Ajantha MendisBowler
favourite #4

Travel

I love travelling, but I also love being at home, at peace; it resets me. When I need a break from work and some solitude, these are the places I escape to:

  1. 1Nuwara Eliya
  2. 2Negombo
  3. 3Kandy
  4. 4Anuradhapura
  5. 5Galle
favourite #5

Astronomy

I love looking past the limits of our own planet, observing the night sky and trying to identify what's out there beyond Earth.

It's also why I joined SEDS Mora (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) at university.

  • Night-sky observing
  • Spotting stars & planets
  • Space exploration

Side quests

What I'm levelling up these days

  • Swimmingactive
  • Gymactive

Animals

I love animals, all of them. Cats are my favourite, hands down.

And elephants. I've never even touched one, and I can't explain why, but I love them.

That's also why I'm building Sathva, a free marketplace that helps people in Sri Lanka find, rehome and adopt pets. Visit Sathva

  • Favourite: cats
  • Soft spot: elephants

Open to animal-welfare work

I'm open to animal-welfare work: volunteering my time or my software skills for a non-profit. If your organization could use a hand, I'd love to hear from you.
